Volunteer Opportunity: Earth Day Work Party at Squalicum Creek Re-Route

Celebrate Earth Day alongside more than 1 billion people worldwide by joining the City of Bellingham and other community partners for our annual Earth Day Community Work Party on Saturday, April 25 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Together, we will remove invasive species to improve fish and wildlife habitat and help water quality near the Squalicum Creek Re-Route Project. This important ecological restoration project was constructed in 2021 to benefit salmon and other native species. Location Please meet at the Birchwood PeaceHealth Parking Lot located off of Birchwood Avenue. Parking, a free bike valet, and the sign-in tent will be located here. Earth Day Recycling Event

Clear your clutter and reduce your environmental impact for Earth Day! The City of Bellingham is partnering with Sanitary Service Company (SSC), Recycling & Disposal Services Inc. (RDS), 1PC, Bellingham Covenant Church, and Whatcom County Health and Community Services to host a free recycling event. Stop by the parking lot of Bellingham Covenant Church any time between noon and 3 p.m. to drop off your hard-to-recycle items for donation and recycling. What to bring: Up to three grocery bags (or 2 banker boxes) of sensitive documents to be shredded in SSC’s shredder truck at the event and then recycled. No need to remove staples, paper clips, or notebook spirals. Ringed binders, CDs, and DVDs can not be shredded. (Shredded paper can’t typically be recycled through residential recycling services in Bellingham). Old TVs, computer monitors, desktop computers, laptops, tablets, e-readers, and portable DVD players to be refurbished or recycled Note: Data on the devices that are refurbished or recycled will be destroyed (more info here) Single-use batteries (such as alkaline): AA, AAA, 9V, C, D, and button cells Lithium primary Rechargeable batteries: Lithium ion (Li-Ion) Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd) Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) Nickel Zinc (Ni-Zn) Small Sealed Lead Acid (SSLA/Pb) Used athletic shoes and sneakers in any size or condition. Shoes will be donated or recycled depending on condition. NOT ACCEPTED: Non-athletic footwear of any kind (i.e. dress shoes, heels, sandals, wedges, water socks, rainboots, cleats, crocs, etc.) At this event, SSC will have their shredder truck to shred and recycle sensitive documents, 1PC will collect electronic waste that can be refurbished, RDS will collect batteries to recycle, and the Bellingham Covenant Church will collect used athletic sneakers to donate or recycle.
