Elgin is a city straddling the Fox River in Kane and Cook counties, about 35 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. With a population of about 114,000, it is the largest city in Kane County and the eighth-largest in Illinois. The first city in Illinois to adopt council-manager government (1954), Elgin is home to School District U-46 (the state's largest unit district), the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, Grand Victoria Casino, and the historic Elgin National Watch Company legacy.
